DANCE CLASS GENERAL OVERVIEW
Alyssa's classes are designed around the American Cabaret style of bellydance. Topics may vary from class to class, but there is a focus on the breakdown of movements and drilling them so they become part of the student’s muscle memory.
Some classes will cover prop use in bellydance (veils, zills/finger cymbals, cane, fire/candles, tray balancing, etc.) as well as rhythms heard in Middle Eastern music. The history of the dance and history of costuming is also discussed in beginner classes. Some classes will go more in depth on certain topics than others, which will be noted in the class session description.
All first time students are provided with a class notebook. A notebook can be one of the best assets to your improvement as a dancer. Carry this notebook throughout your dance career and bring it to any class or workshop you attend, regardless of if it is Alyssa's class or not. Taking notes is encouraged. It is easy to forget something a day or two after class! It is also a great place to keep class handouts. Feel free to personalize your notebook - it is yours!
Handouts will be given almost every week. They will cover the movements we are learning, rhythm breakdowns, brief blurbs on history, culture, costuming, instruments used in Middle Eastern music and even Arabic words you commonly hear in songs. There will also be space for taking notes.
Last, but not least, do not hesitate to ask questions in class! People learn at different rates, so if you are having trouble with something, please ask Alyssa to repeat or clarify it for you. At the end of a session, do not hesitate to ask for Alyssa's feedback on your progress. Sometimes people pick up the dance quickly and sometimes it is best to take the session again. For this reason, the same topic is covered in classes sharing the same session number. There is no pressure to progress to the next session if you feel that you have not mastered the content covered. All of Alyssa's classes are for women ONLY. If you are a man who is genuinely interested in bellydance instruction, please read the FAQs page.
